Wong Kar Wai is an international renowned film director from Hong Kong primarily known as the 'grandmaster' of Hong Kong cinema due to his
unique cinematography and film style. I've always been a fan of the retro and vintage processing, especially colours in film photography. Wong Kar Wai takes all these elements to create a wonderful whirlwind of rich colours to execute themes in his movies. It's also the reason why I call it the 'Wong Kar Wai aesthetic'.
During my last trip to Vietnam, I specifically wanted to visit the
Cafe Apartment in Saigon for a photoshoot due to its textured walls and small alleyways. The building was the perfect location for the photoshoot. My primary focus was to re-create the same burst of colours using neon lights from the building to capture a similar atmosphere that is depicted in Wong Kar Wai's films. Below are some photos I captured from the shoot.
